What strikes me every year during the Halloween season is that many people don't just dress up, but they live it to their last cell.
The unsmiling lawyer briefly becomes a sexy nurse, the serious lady turns into Charlie Chaplin or Zina with a whip...
But how can one achieve such a convincing transformation getting into character and playing this new role just for a few hours?
This custom of feasting, entertainment of "masquerade" and masquerade, is one of the most ancient "Dionysian festivals" of the Greeks, where people disguised themselves, danced, sang while drinking wine and the merriment reached the vertical in honor of Dionysus. But what is it that brings it to this day and preserves it with such gusto?
As children, we have all experienced moments of frustration because some of our needs were not met and we tried to find ways to satisfy them. When we dress up as Zoro or a pirate or a Dartanian etc., subconsciously we wanted to manifest some emotions and some behaviors through which we felt important. What we most wanted and needed to get from others was their attention and love, and in order to achieve this, we all adopted certain roles that aroused the interest of others.
But as adults most people they are locked into roles which either they have not consciously chosen, or they believe that they have been imposed on them by others and this causes them daily strong negative feelings.
We often come into conflict with others, but many times also with ourselves, when we do not have the desired results as we ourselves want or as others wish to give us their acceptance and love.
So during the Halloween season, many find the opportunity to bring out either their inner child who wants to play and the "serious" role they play does not allow them to, or a repressed and deeply buried side of themselves, or an aspect of their personality those who are afraid that they will be ridiculed if they manifest it in their everyday life.
What is good, however, to remember any time when we come into conflict with our roles why they don't have the desired results, is that we can and have the power to decide to get rid of every role that deprives us of our authenticity or leads us to comply with the demands of others and the environment.
We can always put renegotiate terms between what they ask of us and what we want to give!
The basis for achieving this, and we can all achieve it, is to get to know the roles we play in our lives, how we got them and how we can change them. Isn't it interesting to know?
